The genus Smilax L. belongs to the family Smilaceae and tribe Liliaceae,and is widely distributed in China. The plants are rich in steroidal compounds, which are the candidates for the exploration of cardiac and anti-tumor drugs. In recent years,scientists have paid much more attention to steroids because of the increasing incidence of heart cerebrovascular diseases. Bioactivities of the genus Smilax were reviewed, some suggestions were put forward for the investigation and exploration of this genus in the future.
