The research progress of ionic liquids as solvents and catalysts was reviewed. The applications of ionic liquids in some important organic chemical reactions, such as hydrogenation reaction, polomerization reaction, Friedel - Crafts reaction, oxidation reaction and esterification reaction was analyzed briefly. It was pointed out that ionic liquids were of better catalytic performance and application prospect.
