The paper empirically examines determinants of science project performance, taking the archival data from the general programs of the Department of Health Sciences(DHS),National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC).The results show that international and domestic publications are influenced by distinct configurations of variables.International paper output is primarily determined by attributes of principal investigators, teams, and projects, whereas domestic paper output mainly depends on characteristics of affiliated research institutions.Educational levels and professional titles of principal investigators affect project performance significantly, while gender and age have no significant effects. The size, average age,and heterogeneity of teams are significantly associated with project performance.Amount of grants and disciplines are significantly correlated with project performance, though the nature of research not.The affiliation and disciplinary reputation of research institutions are significantly associated with domestic publications and have no significant effects on international publications. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed, and future research avenues are concluded.
