Aim To overcome the incontinuity and redundancy in data storage caused by the regular grids in representing the multi-resolution terrain.Methods Binary tree is used to represent the multi-resolution terrain model.The structure of binary tree is stored using a bit code of the underlying binary tree and the height data are stored in an array.Results This method realizes the continuous storage of multi-resolution digital elevation model（DEM） data and reduces the volume in data storage.Conclusion This is a good way to represent and compress the multi-resolution terrain model.
