The optimization of ship organization at a ship lock is one of the most important issues of a lock scheduling mana- gement system. On the basis of modeling the ship organization issue at the ship lock, a genetic optimization algorithm is proposed, and the implementation of the genetic algorithm adapted to the ship lock issue is described in detail. Simulation models for the ship lock scheduling are given including a traffic flow model and a scheduling model. A prototype simulation system is built, by which 3 ship organization algorithms are compared in detail. The experiment results confirm the effectness of the genetic algorithm.
