By applying the stochastic frontier approach, this paper makes an analysis of the influence of China's regional factor allocation efficiency during the period of 1978-2010 on the total factor productivity, together with a comparison to the research done by Zhang Jun (2009). The results of the study indicate that: (1) the total factor productivity growth comes mainly from technological progress, while the impact of technical efficiency and returns to scale is smaller; (2) the factor allocation efficiency does have a greater impact on the total factor productivity, the contribution of the factor allocation efficiency is negative. Under the conditions of capital growth rate being greater than the labor growth rate, this conclusion is consistent with the fact that China's actual labor remuneration is lower than its real contribution; (3) the results of the regression analysis shows that the factor allocation inefficiency is due to distortions in factor prices, excessive substitution of capital for labor, government intervention, and so on.
