A survey of birds in Lancang River Nature Reserve in western Yunnan of China was conducted from March to April in 2005. 105 species were collected in the survey by mist nets and observation. Combined with 207 species specimens from Lincang area which are kept in KIZ, CAS and published records of 84 species, there are 396 species be longing to 55 families and 19 orders in the nature reserve. The number of species accounts for 47 % of 848 species in Yunnan and 30 % of 1331 species in China, including 2 Class Ⅰ national protected species and 39 Class Ⅱ national protected species. There are 307 species residing in the region, which accounts for 78 % of total species in the region. The composition of avifanna is mostly Oriental species. 292 Oriental species account for 83 % of breeding birds in the area. A further analysis of avifauna suggests birds of the region are mostly from Diannan Hilly Subregion, but birds from South-West Mountainous Subregion are nearly as much as those from Diannan Hilly Subregion. The distribution character of birds in vertical orientation indicates an intensive protection is in need to the primary and secondary broad-leaved forests, especially to the mature secondary forests, which plays an important role to conserve most species in the region.
