Hartley transform(HT) based on the Fourier transform was put forward by Dr. Hartley in 1942. The Hartley transform is a real transform based on harmonic functions and has some characteristics similar to the Fourier transform. The fast Hartley transform(FHT) is twice faster and more convenient to handle than the fast Fourier transform, so it is a real valued alternative to the complex Fourier transform in many applications. This paper introduces the application of Hartley transform to earthquake engineering in detail, including transform of strong earthquake records and the simulation of earthquake ground motion. The examples given in the paper have shown the advantage and efficiency of the Hartley transform than the Fourier transform.
