In Henry Fielding's novels, the heroines are not only pure, beautiful, and of high moral character, but also mainly appear as benefactors to improve hero's moral development. The essay analyses the inherent problem, examining these heroines' various moral choices in specific ethical situations,in order to reveal their passive motivation sheltered under their action of rescue. In other words, the emphasis of heroine characterization is not merely to highlight their moral superiority, but to focus on the heroine's functional value of stimulating hero's moral growth. Furthermore, the description of personality paradox occuring in specific ethical situations shows Henry Fielding's effort to go beyond the traditional female writing style of Romance, and reflects the realistic and moral dimension of his narrative intentions.
