The use of relays in wireless communication networks can improve both the coverage and throughput of the networks. Since the statistics of wireless channels typically vary with time and space, a relay network based on fixed-rate codes may become inefficient or unreliable as these statistics vary. Fountain codes are a new class of error-control codes and suitable for transmission on time-varying channels and multicast channels. The results that there is a natural fit between relay networks and fountain codes are demonstrated, a wireless relay networks using fountain codes can handle efficiency, reliability and robustness simultaneously.
