The popularity of time use survey makes it possible for researchers to analyze the effects of different factors on energy consumption by tracking people's lifestyles. The consumer lifestyle approach was applied in this study to calculate the indirect energy consumption, and the logarithmic mean Divisia index approach was applied to decompose various factors that affect energy consumption. The results show that population and total consumption expenditure are major influences in 1985-2008, and their effect indexes are 2.30 and 2.89. The following are time use, consumption structure with effect indexes of 1.20 and 1.22. By contrast, energy intensity has caused the decrease of energy consumption with effect index of 0.42. The combination of all the factors made 4.03 times difference for energy consumption in total. The effect of population was greater than that of total consumption expenditure and time use between 1985 and 1998. Besides, we analyzed specific activities and noticed the change of time use, consumption expenditure and energy intensity. As a result, we found that the energy consumption of different activities varied markedly.
