Suppliers' involvement in New Product Development (NPD) is recognized as an important way to enhance the competitiveness of enterprises. Previous studies show that trust is perceived as a critical factor in the success of supplier involvement in NPD. Yet it has received limited attention in the literature. The mechanics by which trust contributes to the performance of suppliers' involvement in NPD is not well understood. Despite increased interest in trust factors, there have been few large-scale empirical studies of its efficacy. In particular, adequate importance has not been attached to interpersonal trust. Current studies examine multi-organizational trust, but there is relatively little study of interpersonal trust in China. Given the background of Chinese society, interpersonal trust should receive more attention. Using relational factors from theoretical research and empirical practice as a reference, this paper establishes a system for the thorough research of trust types and its role in supplier involvement in NPD. In this study, the relationships between interpersonal trust, inter-organizational trust, involvement quality and involvement performance are examined. This study uses a selection of Chinese manufacturing enterprises as a sample. The designed model is based on the results of interviews with expert practitioners, including those with experience of successful supplier involvement in NPD. This study proves that: (1) interpersonal trust has a distinct positive impact on inter-organizational trust; (2) interpersonal trust has a distinct positive impact on involvement quality; (3) inter-organizational trust has a distinct positive impact on involve- ment quality; and (4) involvement quality has a distinct positive impact on involvement performance. These results are meaningful for further understanding the relationships among interpersonal trust, inter-organizational trust, involvement quality and involvement performance.
