A 240-day growth experiment was conducted in a re-circulated water system to investigate the effect of dietary vitamin B6 on the protein metabolism of abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino. Juvenile abalone (initial weight: 0. 834±0. 002 g; initial shell length.. 1. 668±0. 003 cm) was fed to satiation with one of 3 semi-purified diets containing vitamin B60, 40, 4 000 mg/kg. Results showed that the contents of pyridoxal-5- phosphate (PLP) in viscera and muscle of abalone significantly increased with the dietary vitamin B6 supplements (P〈0. 05). Dietary vitamin B6 significantly increased protein contents in viscera (P〈0. 05), not in muscle (P〉0.05) of abalone. The activities of alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) both in viscera and muscle were significantly enhanced by dietary vitamin B6 (P〈0.05), and their highest values were found in the treatment with 4000mg/kg dietary vitamin B6 supplement. There were no significant effects of dietary vitamin B6 on the contents of analyzed amino acids in viscera. The contents of Asp, Thr, Ser and Tau in the muscle of abalone were significantly increased by dietary vitamin B6 (P〈0.05). There were no significant differences in the contents of Gly, Ala, Val,and Met in the muscle of abalone between the two vitamin B6-supplemented treatments (40 mg/kg and 4 000 mg/kg) (P〉0.05), but were significantly higher than those in the dietary vitamin B6 deficient treatment (0 mg/kg) (P〈0.05).
