Utilizing the literature analysis method, the development history and stage characteristics of the application oriented talent training of mechanical majors were investigated. The research statuswas analyzed and the existed problems were pointed out, with the emphasis on the talent training pattern, curriculum system and trai-ning plan, practical teaching, quality standard and monitoring system,etc. The developing trends of research and reform of the application oriented talent training of mechanical majors the engineering education reform of mechanical majors were discussed.
