Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of legal blindness in the developed world.Evidence suggests that 10% of individuals in western countries aged 65-74 years and 30% of those aged 75-85 years show signs of AMD.1,2 The reported prevalence of AMD in Chinese cities is similar:15.5% in Shanghai and 11.1% in Taiwan among the people over 50 years of age.3,4 With cataract and glaucoma now being under control,China's AMD challenge is looming over the horizon.
