Initially, the definition and basic hypothesis of interchanges spacing are put forward. Then the factors affecting the distance between interchanges are analyzed and the scientific distance between interchanges on expressways are defined. By proposing the conception of critical safety gap and combining the analysis of speed-change lane lengths and lane-change lengths, the kinematics and probability theory are employed to establish the model of the minimum distance between interchanges based on expressway system. Lastly, the model is verified to be feasible through comparison with the simulation outcome of CORSIM.The result suggests that the minimum distance between interchanges ought to be 1.0- 2.0 km rather than the existing provision in our regulations.
