Based on self-assembly of latex particles on water surface, large closely packed monolayer polystyrene (PS) microspheres arrays were performed on the p-GaN surface of a thin GaN-based light-emitting diode (LED) by transferring diluted PS microspheres from deionized water to the surface of GaN-LED wafer after consolidation of surfactant. Field emission scanning electron microscopy showed that well-ordered two- dimensional arrays of hexagonally packed PS nanospheres are obtained in a short time with a mean diameter at 350 nm, which when added with 75 μL surfactant form two-dimensional crystalline arrays with better results. It proves an effective approach in using the PS microspheres as a mask for further texturing to improve the light extraction efficiency in the high power GaN-based light-emitting diode.
