Both concepts of Desemanticization proposed by grammaticalization linguists and Delexicalization by corpus linguists attach importance to the weakening and even loss of lexical meaning of words, which enables the two perspectives to be complementary and benefitial. The study explores the desemanticized use of BE and HAVE,the two most frequent verbs with both semanticed and desemanticized uses in CLEC,CEW,LOCNESS and ICLE.The results reveal that significant differences exist in regard to the desemanticized, semanticized, finite and non-finite uses of BE and HAVE between Chinese EFL learners of two proficiency levels and between Chinese learners and English native college students;the corpus-based analyses of text themes and cotexts and such SLA perspectives as L1 transfer and leaner characteristics can provide reasonable explanations to features of Desemanticization in Chinese EFL learners' writing. The findings of this study can shed light on EFL teaching.
