Objective:To study the electroencephalogram(EEG) in first episode depression before and after treatment. Methods :Sixty- three patients with first episode depression were evaluated by HAMD 17, and electroencephalogram tests were recorded at the baseline and week 12. Results: The reduction on the HAMD score at weeks 12 was (71.3 ± 20.8 )% , and 32 cases (84.2%) were clinical remission. The abnormality rate of electroencephalogram was 44.7% before treatment and 18.4% after treatment. The difference was significant between before and after treatment( P 〈 0. 01 ). The electroencephalogram change before treatment was mainly paranormal. It showed basic electric activity becoming slow, slow activities increased. Conclusions: The results suggest there is abnormal electroencephalogram in the early stage of depression, and it might provide important evidences to monitor the effect of medicine.
