In order to verify the authenticity of RMB paper currency, a method for extracting and identifying RMB crown word numbers is given. The extracting procedure contains the acquisition, grey processing and binaryzation of images in the pa- per currency and projection method to determine the position of RMB characters. As the characters are extracted one by one, the normalization processing is performed, and then template matching method is used to compare them with the template charac- ters and compute their similarity degree. The proposed method achieved the effective identification rate of 90% in the experi- ments on the images in 50 pieces of RMB paper currency.
