The intensity modulators based on Mach-Zehnder interferometric have the characteristic of frequency shift and can be used to generate a Brillouin frequency shift of the signal light for stimulated Brillouin scattering slow light systems.The principle of frequency shift based on M-Z interferometric intensity modulator is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The 50 ns width pulses signal light with a 9.394 GHz Brillouin frequency shift are produced by using 12.5 Gbit/s intensity modulator.Up to 25 ns time delay could be achieved by using 2.5 km long highly nonlinear fiber under the pump power 20 mW and the 50 ns pulses obtained a 32 dB non-saturated Brillouin gain.
