A novel and simple catalyst system (CuBr2/TEMPO/piperidine)for the oxidation of primary benzylic alcohols to aldehydes by oxygen has been developed.This catalyst system shows high activity and excellent selectivity for the oxidation of various primary benzylic alcohols to the corresponding alde-hydes by oxygen in acetonitrile at 50 ℃without need of additional base as co-catalyst.However,the no-vel catalyst system is not effective in the oxidation of secondary benzylic alcohols,primary aliphatic alco-hols and allylic alcohols.
