The latest progress in surface modification of steel by vacuum coating of Zn-Mg alloy thick films was ten- tatively reviewed in a thought provoking way. The discussions centered on the strengths and weaknesses of the various sur- face modification techniques of steels with Zn-Mg alloy coatings, such as the newly-developed vacuum plating, convention- al wet plating and hot dip plating. The vacuum plated Zn-Mg alloy coatings outperform those deposited by both the wet plating and hot dip plating, with stronger interfacial adhesion, higher corrosion resistance, lower production and mainte- nance costs, easier machinability, and better environmental friendliness. The feasibility and scenario of the surface modifi- cation of steel by vacuum plating of Zn-Mg alloy on industrial scale was also discussed.
