Functional design is the important part of product＇s conceptual design. Function modeling is the key technologies of functional design. Principle and method of ontology are introduced to the course of function modeling of product oriented conceptual design based on researching and summarizing the foundational theory of ontology. Functional ontology model ofproduct oriented conceptual design is set up. Steps of function structure modeling based on function ontology are presented. Conceptual vocabularies are defined to normalize and qualify the functional domain. Functional ontology is built to normalize function knowledge terms for sharing and reusing function knowledge.
