Comprehensive utilization of Theil index, spatial gravity model and cost evaluation model, this paper studies the spatio-temporal differences and driving mechanism of the Songhua River ecological economic corridor basin economy. The results show that: 1) The evolution characteristics of basin economic differences degree are difference, and the basin economic differences degree represents a characteristic that midstream 〉upstream〉downstream, thus the economic development of the midstream plays an important role in the whole basin economic differences. 2) The spatio- temporal differentiation phenomenon of basin economic development is obvious, and the highest level of economic development is in the upstream, but the growth rate has slowed down, whereas the lowest level is in the downstream, but the growth rate has soared. Additional middle and low level development zones occupy the dominant position, but the number is decreasing, indicating that catchment economy has gradually improved, but the overall level is still low. 3) The environmental cost, which is characterized by midstream 〉upstream 〉downstream, is evolved into a characteristic that it reaches the highest level in midstream and the lowest level in upstream. In addition, the external costs of different cities in the river basin are difference, that is, the external costs of comprehensive city are lowest, while that of resource-based cities and regional cities are highest. 4) The spatio-temporal differentiation driving mechanism of the Songhua River economic development is different, and the driving mechanism of upstream is ownership structure, industrial structure, environmental management and government regulation, however, that of midstream is ownership structure and foreign investment, while that of downstream is ownership structure, government regulation and technology.
