A novel conjugated polyelectrolyte containing meta-substituted pyridyl groups in the backbone(P1) and sulfonate groups in the side chain is reported as an optical pH-sensitive probe in aqueous solution.The ability of P1 to function as a colorimetric and fluorescent pH probe was demonstrated with dramatic color and fluorescence changes upon introduction of acid.These photophysical responses were attributed to the protonation of pyridyl units accompanied with an aggregation behavior of P1 in acidic solution,which is confirmed by dynamic light scattering.This work presents the feasibility of varying the mainchain structures to fine-tune the pH-dependent properties of the resulting conjugated poly-electrolytes(CPEs).
