The existence of hybrid organizations that incorporate elements from multiple institutional logics poses an effi-cient and sustainable way to solve social problems. However, we know relatively little about how this new type of organi-zational form secures legitimacy at the first place. We aim to fill this gap by providing an in-depth case study of a hybrid social organization-“One Foundation”. Based on the process of legitimating One Foundation, we first provide a dynamic framework of the interaction process among three kinds of legitimacy including regulative legitimacy, normative legitima-cy and cognitive legitimacy. Then we summarize different types of institutional work that actors adopt to strategically take advantage of external institutional environment and acquire legitimacy. Our paper makes some important theoretical and practical contributions by providing a bottom-up social innovation case in the Chinese context.
