The subjective rules for the use of tones create the initial stage of currently used Chinese Braille. According to a survey of 200 blind students and 40 teachers from 9 high schools, the teachers and students make a "neutral" evaluation of the tone-marking for currently used Chinese Braille, as well as of its pronunciation guessing and meaning guessing. The 8th-year students and the llth-year students show a significant difference in the evaluation of pronunciation guessing and meaning guessing, respectively. The students from the northern dialect area show a significantly lower evaluation of pronunciation guessing and meaning guessing than those from the southern dialect area. There is a great demand for the increase of the marking of tones, especially the marking of the tones of unconanon words. Some 42% of the students and the same proportion of the teachers expect the future marking of tones for the existing Chinese Braille, of which an abbreviated version is expected to resolve the conflicts between the marking of tones and the increase of length.
