The paper summarizes the features, present situations and applications of optimal design theoryfor complex mechanical systems. Some solutions of optimal design have been discussed from the two aspects of setting up mathematical models and seeking sdutions. The trends and a number of important issues of optimal design and its application to internal combustion engines have been projected.
