As an important eukaryotic subcellular organelle, the mitochondrion plays an important role in many physiological and pathological processes. The rapid developments in proteomic techniques have promoted the studies of mitochondrial proteomics. As a new science in the era of post-genomics, proteomic techniques provide a very effective approach to explore differentially expressed mitochondrial proteins in various physiological and pathological processes. This article reviews the status, problems and future prospects of recent studies in mitochondrial proteomics.
