Oceanic carbon monoxide (CO) has been of biogeochemical interest for decades because of its im portant roles in regulating the atmospheric concentration of hydroxyl radicals, participating in the global carbon cycle and thus affecting the global climate change. The advances of studies on oceanic carbon monoxide in the past several decades are reviewed in this paper. The distribution, sea-to-air flux, sources and removal pathways of CO in marine environments are introduced in detail. Some questions deserving further research are proposed.
