The recent development on the solvothermal synthesis of nanostructured bismuth tellurides has been reviewed. The chemical reactions and crystal growth during solvothermal synthesis, especially the synthesis, formation and structural features of bismuth telluride nanotubes, have been discussed. The bismuth telluride based coessential nanostructured composite, in which the nanopowders have the similar chemical composition as the matrix alloy, reaches a high figure of merit of ZT ≈1.25, which not only is much higher than that of the matrix material but also higher than that of the state-of-the-art bulk bismuth telluride based thermoelectric materials.
