Hu Shi translated the poem of Longfellow who was anAmerican poet in the 19th century, and offered a positive evaluation, showing two different concepts in his translation career. He was directly or indirectly influenced by Longfellowon in his creation of poetry, anthology compiling, and the idea of new poetry, as a catalyst in the development of Chinese new literature. This paper argues that Hu Shi adapted the original poetry in translating Longfellow＇ s works, and adopted the strategy of domestication to cater to the interest of the oriental readers, which is a reflection of his new perspective and native literature experience.
