The schemes of domestic wireless gas meter reading system （gas meter direct reading based on handheld meter-reading machine, wireless master gas meter reading based on handheld meter- reading machine and remote gas meter reading） and hardware configuration are introduced. The application of wireless gas meter reading system in the three pilot residential areas is discussed. The advantages, disad- vantages and problems of wireless gas meter reading technology are summarized, and some suggestions are made.
