Through a research of the spatial evolvement of the settlement in northeastern Shanghai during 1843 -1949, the authors discover that the spatial structure of the settlement was a fan-shape centered roughly on the urban built-up area. The southern, middle and northern parts had altogether experienced the transformation from natural village to built-up area. In short, the spatial structure of the settlement in Shanghai changed from the traditional network jointed on commercial towns to the circular construction centered on the urban built-up area.
