Four key characteristics of cohousing are summarized, namely cooperative development, community autonomy, consensus decision-making and condominium. It is concluded that the four interdependent characteristics are the foundation of residents-led-community. It is also discussed that cohousing can provide useful reference for collective community in rural China as well as emerging individual cooperative housing and intentional communities in urban China.
