Links between periodontal diseases and atherosclerosis have been well documented by epidemiological studies. Porphyromonas gingivalis is the main pathogenic bacteria and oral resident bacteria. It invaded endothelial cell to induce dysfunction of endothelial cell and proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells in the intima, enhanced macrophage infiltration, elevated levels of inflammatory marks, lipid accumulation in the arterial wall, foam cell formation, and advances in other proatherogenic signs. This article reviewed the possible pathogenesis mechanisms of Porphyromonas gingivalis in the development of atherosclerosis by animal model experiments and in vitro studies.
