The events such as dead pigs floating over rivers and pork from dead pigs appearing in the market places occur in China often in recent years. Treatment of dead pigs from sickness became a hot topic. Using the data from pig producers in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province and applying the cost-benefit framework and the multivariate Probit model, this paper conducted an empirical analysis of the factors affecting the treatment method selection of producers' dead pigs. Results show that the variables, such as the number of family labors, the scale of pig production operations, and production mode, have influences on the choice of producers' treatment of dead pigs. It can promote producers to adopt the harmless method to handle dead pigs with the subsidies of sows and pigs from the Government. With the increase of producers' age, education level, and production experience they will decrease their random behaviors to discard dead pigs. This paper suggests that the Government should increase the relevant propaganda of policies and regulations and establish subsidy policies to compensate producers for the dead pigs. It is significant to provide trainings for producers to help them to understand and learn the harmless treatment methods of dead pigs. The final purpose is to promote the healthy and rapid development of pig industry in China.
