Reptiles lay monomorphic white eggs while birds lay eggs with various colors and conspicuous patterns. The diversity of avian egg coloration is believed to be the result of natural selection. By more than 120 years＇ research, ornithologists have developed several hypotheses to explain the avian egg coloration. However, the existing results are quite mixed and thus make them difficult to reach a consensus. Here we review and discuss the hypotheses and studies of egg color evolution in terms of predation, aposematism, solar radiation and brood parasitism.
