The mode analysis of He-Ne laser is an important experiment for understanding the effect of laser optical resonator. Combining the teaching practice in the physics department of Beijing Normal University, the main concepts regarding laser mode formation and the method of laser mode analysis were introduced. The mode structures of two lasers with different length were studied. Some often-neglected phenomena, such as the warming up of laser, were discussed in detail to help students to understand the basics of laser.
