To meet tourists' needs, hotels should combine local culture and design in their exterior and interior decoration, which will enhance the authenticity of reception services. However, modern hotels also have to provide tourists with food, accommodation, entertainment and other basic functions that need to be standardized. From a consumer perspective, tourists require personalization and innovation in hotel design yet still need popular, cost- effective hospitality products. There is an apparent dilemma between authenticity and standardization of hotel design. Based on previous studies, this paper continues the theoretical analysis exploring the concept of authenticity, the connotations and evolution of authenticity and examines service standardization. We expand the theoretical framework of authenticity and standardization. In this paper, authenticity research examines hotel design, environment and local culture. Discussions exploring standardization look at industry or hotel group internal norms and focus on the basic functions of hotel accommodation and ways to communicate authenticity to consumers. Hotel designs are divided into four categories according to authenticity and standardization. These categories are: authentic design, standard design, a combination of authentic design and standard design and market follower. To analyze the four hotel styles and discuss the incorporation of authenticity and standardization into hotel design, this study combines theoretical and empirical research methods. We use interviews, participant observation and photos for collecting primary data. Network information provides secondary evidence. The hotels investigated were Crosswaters Ecolodge & Spa, Commune by the Great Wall, 7 Days Inn and some guesthouses. This study found Crosswaters Ecolodge & Spa emphasized a combination of authenticity and standardization while Commune by the Great Wall was more concerned with authenticity. 7 Days Inn attached great importance to standardization and guesthouses at the North Gate
