Objective To explore urinary cadmium levels of populations living in cadmium-polluted areas in Guangxi. Methods In 2014-2015,four villages in three areas with heavy metal pollution were selected as study group, and three comparable villages were selected as the control group. In both polluted areas and non-polluted areas, urinary cadmium levels of residents 18-75 years old were measured by ICP-MS. Results A total of 1 709 residents participated in the study and their urinary samples were determined for cadmium. Urinary cadmium levels of the 1 129 peoples in the polluted areas ranged between 0.04-45.41 μg/g cr with a mean of 4.58 μg/g cr,and a median of 3.46 μg/g cr. The qualified rate of urinary cadmium samples in observed group was 97.3%. Urinary cadmium levels of the 580 residents in the control group ranged between 0.11-14.21 μg/g cr with a mean of 3.19 μg/g cr,and a median of 2.77 μg/g cr. The qualified rate of urinary cadmium samples in control group was 100%. Residents in the polluted areas had significantly higher urinary cadmium levels compared with those in the control areas(P〈 0.01). In the polluted areas, women had higher urine cadmium levels than men. Compared with their peers in the control areas, women in the polluted area had higher urinary cadmium levels(P〈 0.01),while men did not have significant higher urinary cadmium levels(P〈 0.05). Urine cadmium levels increased with age for all participants in both polluted and non-polluted areas. Conclusion Residents in areas with heavy metal pollution have significantly higher level of urinary cadmium levels compared with those in non-polluted areas in Guangxi.
