Aim: To study the change of iron metabolism in the brain of the post traumatic epilepsy (PTE) animal model, identify the role of the iron in the mechanism of the PTE. Methods: The method introduced by Willmore to establish rat model of PTE, detected the content of the ferritin (Ft) and transferring (Tf) in the brain tissue by enzyme-linked immunosorbentassay (ELISA). Results: The content of the Ft was increased instantly in the whole brain tissue in the early time, 15 days later, its content in the opposite side brain tissue was decreased, but the content in the experimental side brain tissue presented a tendency of increase. The content of the Tf raised to a high level only in the experimental side brain tissue and had a tendency of increase with the development of time. Conclusion: Iron metabolism in the brain of PTE animal model is very complex, the growth of the correlating proteinsi contents, especially Tf, prompts that iron may be a part of the mechanism of PTE.
