Pancreatic fibrosis is a characteristic feature of chronic pancreatitis and of desmoplastic reaction associated with pancreatic cancer. Activated pancreatic stellate cell （PSC） plays a pivotal role in fibrogenesis associated with pancreatitis. PSC is strongly related to the progression of fibrosis in pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. Recent studies identified PSC in the fibrotic islets, suggesting that PSC might play an important role in this process. This review summarizes the current literatures addressing the interactions between PSC and pancreatic diseases, including pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer and diabetes mellitus.
