Coronary blood vessels is so important to the normal functioning of the heart for providing nutrients and oxygen. The wall of coronary blood vessel is made up of smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells. The structure and function of the coronary artery smooth muscle of coronary vessels can influence the normal functioning of the heart a lot. Molecular pathways that control the differentiation, migration, and the number of available smooth muscle progenitor cells play key roles in determining blood vessel size and structure. Defects in these pathways will produce malformations of developing blood vessels. A better understanding of the molecular mechanisms that uniquely specify and maintain vascular smooth muscle cell precursors is essential for utilizing progenitor cell biology for somatic cell reprogramming to induce the revascularization.
