The relationship between North Vietnam and ASEAN was hostile to each other during the Cold War.When Vietnam went to unity in 1975,the relationship between them achieved a brief détente.Vietnam and ASEAN confronted each other again after Vietnam invaded Cambodia in 1978.With the end of Cold War,the bilateral relations began to gain détente gradually.In 1995,Vietnam joined ASEAN.From then on,Vietnam and ASEAN relations realized historic rapprochement,Southeast Asia area went towards a new direction of unity and integration.The relationship between them had comprehensive background factors and respective interest considerations,manifesting some apparent characteristics.
