This paper discusses the application characteristics of ultrasonic testing in non-destructive detecting domain, as well as the applications of ultrasonic non-destructive testing in multiple areas. Emphases are placed on the application of ultrasonic testing to the insulators of power system through analysis and comparison of the ultrasonic testing principles, waveforms, continuity and display modes. The mechanism, characteristics and application scope of ultrasonic insulator detecting are introduced, and the merits and demerits of different methods are compared. Furthermore, the development trend of ultrasonic testing is predicted, and the advantages and disadvantages of the air coupling ultrasonic testing and the laser ultrasonic testing are simply introduced with their applications prospect.
