The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ), a ligand-activated transcription factor, belongs to the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily. It has important roles in adipogenesis and immune response as well as in both lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Although synthetic agonists for PPARγ are widely used as insulin sensitizers, the identity of natural agonists for PPARγ is still unclear. At present, the natural agonists of PPARγ mainly include oxidized and nitrated fatty acids, such as 9-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (9-HODE), 13-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (13-HODE), and 15-deoxy-△ 12, 14-prostaglandin J2, OA- NO2 and LNO2. This article reviewed the recent achievements of natural agonists ofPPARγ .
