TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by pulsed laser ablation of a titanium target immersed in the poly- (vinylpyrrolidone) solution. The products were systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicated that the rutile TiO2 nanocrystalline particles could be synthesized at once at room temperature and the mean size in diameter is about 50 nm with narrow size distribution. A probable formation process was proposed on the base of the microstructure and the in- stantaneous plasma plume induced by laser. This study shows that pulse laser ablation in liquid media is a good method to synthesize some nanaparticles with special structures which are difficult to be produced by other conventional methods.
