The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was employed for the determination of 16 rare earth elements in 44 tea samples collected from different regions in south Shaanxi province in order to evaluate their contents and the relatives of the contents with their origin characteristics. The results showed that the contents of the rare earth elements differed significantly in tea samples. The contents of the elements La, Ce, and Nd were 124.81, 172.13, and 87.20 μg·kg-1 respectively, which were higher than the other elements. The contents of the rare earth oxides ranged from 200.32 to 1558.35 μg·kg-1 in the tea samples with the tendency of higher contents from west to east in the survey region, which were all below the limit of tea standards in China. The content distri- bution of the rare earth elements in tea presented significant differences with the regions, and showed similar abun- dance curve. Principal component analysis showed the rare earth elements were divided into light rare earth group and heavy rare earth group, which proved indirecdy there were differences from soil to tea between light rare earth elements and heavy rare earth elements. The cluster analysis results indicated that the contents of the rare earth ele- ments in the tea samples were important indexes for the identification of their origin characteristics.
